Aiteo Cup: We’ll not take Tornadoes for granted- Maikaba

Akwa United head coach, Abdu Maikaba said Niger Tornadoes pack a punch and they could be real trouble as they clash in today’s Aiteo Cup final at the Agege Stadium, Lagos.
Tornadoes dispatched highly rated Nigeria Professional Football League champions, Plateau United and defending Aiteo Cup champions, FC Ifeanyiubah on their way to the final.

"This is a Cup final and I expect it to be a very difficult game,” Maikaba told npfl.ng.

“Remember that Tornadoes like us passed through some difficult opponents and what they have achieved is something that no one can look at them and underrate them. They are a very dangerous and strong opposition. They showed it in their previous matches by defeating the (AITEO) Cup holders FC Ifeanyiubah and also beat the league champions Plateau United.

“So we will be doing ourselves a disservice if we think it will be an easy game for us.”

However, Maikaba recognises that winning the AITEO Cup represents the only chance for The Promise Keepers to qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup next year after finishing in fourth place behind Plateau United, MFM FC and Enyimba in the NPFL.

The Akwa United manager remains confident that his team can keep their promise to their faithful by winning their second Cup title in three years after winning it in 2015.

“When they won the title two years ago I was not part of the team. Now it will be good not just for my career but for the club and their supporters that we win it again this year. We are prepared to do so because it will give us the chance to play on the continent next year as well, so we are not going to disappoint,” Maikaba said.

It is the first time both teams will face each other in the AITEO Cup final.
